Expository Sermon: Trust in the Lord

Proverbs 29:25 "Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe."

In this world, we often live under the heavy burden of human scrutiny and the constant anxiety of seeking approval from others. John Wesley earnestly warned that the fear of man is a spiritual idol that paralyzes the soul and severely hinders our sanctification. Today's text declares that while fearing human beings entraps our lives in a fatal snare, placing our absolute and unwavering trust in the Lord brings true, eternal safety.

1. The Spiritual Snare of Fearing Man (v. 25a)

Expository Sermon: The first half of the verse warns us of a critical spiritual crisis, using the vivid metaphor of a "snare" to describe the fear of man. From a Wesleyan perspective, this fear is a defining symptom of original sin, which suffocates our total trust in God and completely halts the lifelong process of entire sanctification. When we overly conscious of social status, worldly reputation, or earthly powers, we compromise the purity of the gospel and conform to the world. Just as an animal caught in a hunter's trap can never escape by its own strength, a soul trapped by human approval loses its freedom and falls into spiritual bondage, presenting a fatal obstacle to spiritual growth.

Cross-Reference Commentary: In connection with this truth, Isaiah 51:12 presents a powerful divine rebuke to those who fear mortal man who dies and the sons of men who wither like grass, while completely forgetting their Sovereign Creator. This passage beautifully unfolds how the eternal consolation and omnipotent power of Jehovah infinitely outweigh any finite human threat, descriptively proving that God alone is the ultimate object of our holy reverence and fear.

Application: Are you compromising your conscience or hiding your faith in your workplace or community out of fear of isolation or criticism? Break free from the spiritual snare of human evaluation and look solely to God, the sovereign ruler of your soul, to fully restore the true spiritual liberty He freely gives.

2. The Divine Safety of Trusting in the Lord (v. 25b)

Expository Sermon: The second half of the verse proclaims, "whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe," revealing the ultimate secret to overcoming all human anxiety. Here, "safety" is not merely the absence of external conflict, but the unshakable stability of a soul resting secure in God's preventing and justifying grace. John Wesley defined true faith as a total, experiential reliance on the mercy of God and the merits of Jesus Christ. When we surrender our sovereignty and trust Him completely, the storms of life cannot move us, and His omnipotent hand becomes our ultimate and eternal refuge.

Cross-Reference Commentary: This is beautifully illustrated in Psalm 18:2, where David passionately confesses that the Lord is his rock, his fortress, and his deliverer. This descriptive confession, forged through years of fleeing Saul's relentless pursuit, affirms that those who make God their refuge will never be shaken but will enjoy His absolute protection even in the most desperate circumstances.

Illustration: In the 18th century, while John Wesley was sailing to America, a terrifying storm struck the Atlantic. The ocean roared, splitting the sails and flooding the ship, throwing the English passengers into a state of absolute panic and despair. However, a group of Moravian Christians on board remained perfectly calm, singing praises to God without a hint of fear. Even their children showed a serene peace. This deeply challenged Wesley, revealing a faith that did not fear the environment but trusted fully in the Lord, manifesting heavenly safety in the midst of a raging storm.

Application: Is a fierce storm shaking your life right now? Do not lose heart by looking at your circumstances or the people around you, but trust entirely in the Lord, our eternal Rock, so that you may possess the true peace and safety that the world can neither give nor take away.

3. The Spiritual Fruit of Trust and Safety (v. 25 Full Application)

Expository Sermon: The entire verse contrasts the snare of fear with the safety of trust, showing us the practical fruit of holiness we must bear. In a Wesleyan framework, this text serves as a spiritual roadmap toward Christian perfection—the life of perfect love and holiness. A person who trusts God completely is no longer enslaved by human evaluation or the fear of persecution. Consequently, they can boldly practice social holiness and justice for the marginalized without keeping silent before worldly righteousness. The peace of Christ reigning in a fearless heart transcends personal salvation, becoming a powerful catalyst for transforming society.

Cross-Reference Commentary: Furthermore, Hebrews 13:6 instructs believers to confidently declare, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?" This passage descriptively confirms that because Christ Himself acts as our helper, we can boldly manifest the power of the gospel without shrinking back from any human hostility or social disadvantage.

Application: Are you hesitating to practice righteousness and love because you are constantly walking on eggshells around others? Trust in our Almighty Helper, boldly spread the fragrance of Christ, and make a firm commitment today to bear the rich fruits of practical sanctification in your daily life.

Conclusion:

My beloved saints, through the Book of Proverbs today, we have engraved a profound spiritual truth upon our hearts: we must utterly cast away the fear of man that leads to destruction, and place our entire trust in the Lord, who is our eternal refuge. As John Wesley passionately proclaimed, the temptation to fear people always seeks to bind us as slaves to sin, but the grace of the cross completely sets us free from every spiritual snare.

True safety does not depend on changing worldly wealth or fleeting human guarantees, but exists solely under the protective wings of our Almighty God. Like the Moravians who sang praises in the midst of the Atlantic storm, we must not be shaken by our surroundings or cold human gazes, but must follow a holy method of trusting God at every moment. Only through this total trust can we overcome the world as His holy people.

As you step out into the world, may you be completely delivered from the miserable snare of man and enjoy the abundant safety of heaven by trusting in the Lord. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, strive for personal holiness, practice social holiness toward your neighbors, and live as faithful disciples who expand the Kingdom of God. May the infinite peace of our Lord be with you all.
