Philippians 3:10 Devotional - Knowing Christ

"that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death"

In Philippians 3, the Apostle Paul confesses that he counts as loss everything he once boasted in - his lineage, his education, his religious zeal. The one thing he sought to hold onto above all else was the knowledge of Christ. The Greek word translated "that I may know," γνῶναι (gnōnai), does not mean mere informational knowledge but a personal, experiential knowing. It is like the way a husband and wife come to know one another - a knowledge that deepens within relationship. A believer's life of faith must not stop at knowing doctrine, but must move forward into a life of personal companionship with Christ.

Paul goes on to speak of "the power of His resurrection." This power, expressed by the word δύναμις (dynamis), is the very power that raised Jesus from among the dead, and it still works today through the Holy Spirit in the midst of a believer's weakness. Even in moments when life feels collapsed and hope seems cut off, the power of the resurrection raises up new life within us.

Yet Paul did not seek only the glory of resurrection. He also sought "the fellowship of His sufferings." κοινωνία (koinōnia) means not mere participation but deep union and sharing. A believer united with Christ is called to share not only in His glory but also in His sufferings. This is the process by which the Holy Spirit shapes us into the image of Christ, and it touches on the journey of sanctification that John Wesley emphasized.

Finally, the confession "being conformed to His death" speaks of the daily death of the old self. συμμορφιζόμενος (symmorphizomenos) means being formed into the same shape as Christ's death - a painful process, yet one that at the same time leads toward true freedom and life. Today too, the Holy Spirit is crucifying our self-centered old self and shaping us into a new self that resembles Christ.

1. Am I living closer to knowing Christ as information, or to knowing Him personally?
2. In which weak areas of my life do I want the power of the resurrection to work?
3. What might it concretely look like today for me to share in the sufferings of Christ?

Let Us Pray:
Lord, help us to know Christ personally and to live by the power of His resurrection. Put to death our old self daily and shape us into a new self that resembles Christ. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
